Notes
Everything that we do costs us in terms of energy expenditure.
-
ATP is the fuel (Adenosine Triphosphate) - the bedrock of energy transformation
-
We have to be careful not to overspend, we have to live within the limits of our attention bandwidth.
-
Wanting & reward system (dopamine) is easier to trigger than the pleasure & liking system (opioid), but it’s impossible to satiate (hedonic treadmill).
- Netflix and other attention-related platforms use the same psychological principles as slot machines to keep us coming back for more. (scroll-hit-reward-wanting more; the unpredictability of the rewards keeps us scrolling/watching)
How to reclaim attention?
-
Turn off devices!
-
Phone settings: Blue/Yellow filter on
-
TV settings: turn brightness down, picture mode ? - less bombardment of light
- Too much short wave light (blue light)—but blue light glasses don’t help. In order for them to work to block enough blue light, they’d need to be so dark orange that you couldn’t really see out of them anymore.
-
Silence as an essential nutrient. Our primal minds evolved in a world of much less noise. Each sound we hear needs to be engaged: is it a threat or an opportunity?
